Gas imports via pipelines liquefied natural gas (LNG) accounted for more than 80% of eu-27 U.K. gas supplies in 2020, up 65% a decade earlier, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration. In 2020, pipeline imports to the region accounted for 74 percent of all natural gas imports 26 percent of LNG imports.
Eu UK gas pipeline imports come Russia, Norway, North Africa Azerbaijan. Pipeline imports Russia, a larger supplier in the region, grew around 11Bcf/d (11Bcf/d) in 2010 to over 13 Bcf/d in 2020, a year of low consumption due to covid-19-related impacts. Imports Norway averaged about 9 Bcf/d between 2010 2020.
LNG imports tend to fluctuate year to year -- as low as 3.6 Bcf/d in 2014 to as high as 10.1 Bcf/d in 2019 -- depending on global gas prices, cold-weather-driven demand pipeline supply availability. Most LNG shipped to Europe is supplied under long-term contracts. However, growing flexible LNG supplies, mainly the US, contributed to a significant increase in European LNG imports 2019 to 2021.
In the past decade, local production in Europe has played a smaller role in meeting Europe's gas demand. 2010 to 2020, gas production in the EU27 the United Kingdom fell by more than 50%, 18 Bcf/d in 2010 to 9 Bcf/d in 2020. This decline is the result of resource depletion the overall phase-out of gas production in the region.
Gas demand in the European region has stabilized at around 45 Bcf/d over the five-year period 2016 to 2020. Natural gas consumption by European industrial sectors, fuel conversion is difficult, has remained almost constant, averaging 13.7 Bcf/d over the 2010-2020 period. Energy efficiency measures electrification will reduce natural gas consumption in the residential commercial sectors to an average of 17 Bcf/d in 2020.
Natural gas consumption in the power sector declined significantly between 2010 2014 due to the increasing use of renewable energy in power generation. Natural gas consumption in the European power sector has increased since 2016 due to the systematic decommissioning of coal-fired power plants across Europe, particularly nuclear power plants in Germany.
