World gas reserves ranking

1. Iran: Proven natural gas reserves: 34 trillion cubic meters, equivalent to 224.4 billion barrels of crude oil equivalent

Saudi Arabia, the United States  Russia often come to mind when it comes to controlling the world oil  gas market. Although we know that Iran is also rich in oil resources, but compared with Saudi Arabia, the United States  Russia, it seems to be slightly inferior.

2. Russia: Proven gas reserves: 32.3 trillion cubic meters, equivalent to 213.2 billion barrels of crude oil equivalent

Five of the world's top 10 gas fields are in Russia: Urengoy, Shtokman, Yamburg, Zapolyarnoye  Bovanenko. A significant portion of Russia's gas reserves are located in Siberia, which accounts for about 50 percent of Russia's total gas reserves.

3. Qatar: Proven natural gas reserves: 24.5 trillion cubic meters, equivalent to 161.7 billion barrels of oil equivalent

Qatar may be small, but it has plenty of natural gas. Qatar, which has far more natural gas than oil reserves, was once the world's largest LNG exporter. Twelve years ago, Qatar suspended production of its largest gas field, the North Field (part of which is in Iran, which calls it South Pars).

4. Turkmenistan: Proven natural gas reserves: 17.5 trillion cubic meters, equivalent to 115.5 billion barrels of oil equivalent

Turkmenistan's oil reserves are  exceptional, but the country's gas reserves are.

At 17.5 trillion cubic meters of proven gas reserves, which translates to 115.5 billion barrels of oil equivalent, this is more than all of Russia's proven oil reserves (102.4 billion barrels).

5. United States: Proven natural gas reserves: 10.4 trillion cubic meters, equivalent to 68.6 billion barrels of oil equivalent

Although the United States is  number one in natural gas reserves, it is number one in natural gas production. Thanks to the shale revolution, the United States has overtaken Russia as the world's largest producer of natural gas.

6. Saudi Arabia: Proven natural gas reserves: 8.3 trillion cubic meters, equivalent to 54.8 billion barrels of oil equivalent

Despite its dominance in oil, Saudi Arabia lags far behind Iran  Russia in natural gas.

7. United Arab Emirates: Proven natural gas reserves: 6.1 trillion cubic meters, equivalent to 40.3 billion barrels of oil equivalent

8. Venezuela: Proven gas reserves: 5.6 trillion cubic meters, equivalent to 37 billion barrels of oil equivalent

Venezuela has the world's largest oil reserves,  there are plenty of natural gas associated with such huge reserves.

9. Nigeria: Proven natural gas reserves: 5.1 TCM,  33.7 billion barrels of oil equivalent

Nigeria is Africa's largest oil  natural gas reserves.

10. Algeria: Proven natural gas reserves: 4.5 trillion cubic meters, equivalent to 29.7 billion barrels of oil equivalent

Algeria is Africa's largest producer of natural gas, producing 83 billion cubic meters in 2015.
